About your course
Tapestry weaving is very versatile medium. Leave the square, rectangular and pictorial format behind and explore techniques for 3d sculptural tapestry. Weaving can be manipulated in many ways by leaving areas of exposed and unwoven warp, adding supplementary warps or pulling and pushing the warp to create shaped or 3d tapestries.
During this workshop you will create small samples exploring a range of techniques, learning how to plan and create 3d and curved forms, before going on to create your own 3 d tapestry.
Working in a professional tapestry artist studio you will have access to a range of materials and equipment and will learn to
- Set up simple frame loom using a continuous warp.
- Planning a shaped tapestry
- Create curves and angles in tapestry – pulled warp technique.
- Work with open weave and exposed warps.
- Finishing and presenting your work
Level: Beginners and developing weavers
The course is suitable for weavers with a little experience of tapestry weaving (have completed and introduction to tapestry course) and who wish to explore tapestry technique further. The workshop is structured to provide individual tuition within a small group of studentsAbout your tutor
About your tutor
Fiona Hutchison graduated from the tapestry department, Edinburgh College of Art in 1985. She exhibits regularly in the UK, Europe and internationally. As well as teaching many independent workshops and mentoring emerging artists she has taught tapestry weaving and stitched textiles at Edinburgh University (Edinburgh College of Art). Currently teaching short courses at West Dean College, Gartmore House and at the Dovecot Studios.
Weekend Studio Workshops £225. Workshop fees include all materials, tea and coffee (please bring lunch) and the used of all equipment. A weaving frame and bobbin will be provided for your use. If you wish to continue weaving you can purchase the weaving kit (frame, bobbin and portfolio bag for £45).
Workshops run from 10am – 4pm. in my studio at WASPS, Studio 114, Patriothall, Stockbridge, Edinburgh EH3 5AY
