Loom Thinking and Drawing – Materials and techniques
4 day summer school. May 18th to 21st
In this workshop we will explore a wide range of techniques and materials that can be used in contemporary tapestry weaving.
Taking inspiration from the work of tapestry artist Magdalena Abakanowicz and Shelia Hicks, 2 of the “Grad Dams” of Tapestry weaving, who rose to prominence in the 1960 and 70s. They were hugely influential in the development of contemporary tapestry and brough a new approach to creating of woven tapestry.
They became known for their large scale textural and sculptural works. Working with a diverse range of materials and techniques. Pushing the creative possibilities the structure of tapestry offers and working with both traditional wools and linens to experimenting with more unusual or everyday yarns, such as sisal, jute, twine, paper and repurposed materials.
Their ideas and designs were developed through drawings and quick stetches, but tapestry was worked directly onto the loom, without the use of a cartoon. Responding directly to the qualities and nature of these new materials, this became known as Loom Thinking.
In this 4 day workshop we will do some “Loom Thinking”.
Taking a closer look at the works of Abakanowicz and Hicks, setting up a series of sample to examining the range materials and techniques they used, before going on to develop a small project using loom thinking and drawing.
Taking inspirating from their monumental works we will be working a series of samples (on a small scale).
Working directly on to the loom we will explore
- the surfaces and textures the different range of materials will give
- explore a range of techniques: knots, whipping, twining, tufting, double warp weaving
- working with the structure of weaving – manipulating the warps and wefts creating slits, pushing and pulling warps, adding supplementary warps, and working with exposed/coloured warps.
At the end of the workshop, you will have a collection of samples documenting the above techniques. You will have experience of handling a diverse range of materials working directly on to the loom. You will also have the opportunity to develop some project ideas and discuss with the tutor how best to plan and execute them.
